The story picks up with Ted marrying his girlfriend, Tami-Lynn. The couple soon decides they want to have a baby, but they face a major legal hurdle: to be a father, the government must recognize Ted as a person rather than property. This leads Ted and his best friend John Bennett, played by Mark Wahlberg, on a quest to sue the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. They enlist the help of a young, amateur lawyer named Samantha L. Jackson to fight for Ted’s civil rights.
