Historically, the Hadaka Matsuri is a misogi (purification) rite. Participants wear fundoshi (loincloth) — not out of eroticism, but to symbolize shedding ego and social hierarchy. The festival’s chaos (touching the shin-otoko , or "sacred man") is meant to absorb bad luck. The body is ritual equipment, not a sexual object.
