He’d returned from the city after years abroad—doctors, he’d tell anyone who asked, though whether he’d studied in Accra or Kumasi or further didn’t much matter. What mattered was the confidence in his handshake, the crooked smile that softened his eyes, and the little black bag he carried wherever he went.
For those unfamiliar with the Akan phrase, "Asem mpe nipa" translates roughly to "Situation does not favor the human" or, more fluidly, "Life’s circumstances are often contrary to man’s wishes" or "It is difficult to find a perfect situation for a person."
