A six-member international crew captures an unmanned space probe returning from Mars with soil samples. Exobiologist Hugh Derry discovers and revives a dormant, single-celled organism—the first definitive evidence of life beyond Earth.
Initially nicknamed "Calvin" by a group of schoolchildren, the organism rapidly evolves into a multi-cellular predator that is "all muscle, all brain, and all eye".
