This tension came to a head in the infamous “LGB Drop the T” movement of recent years—a small but vocal faction arguing that transgender issues are a distraction from sexual orientation rights. They fail to see the obvious: that the same weapon of essentialism used against gay people (“It’s not natural”) is the sword used against trans people (“It’s not real”).
