The Van Der Wijck was a Dutch steamship that operated in the early 20th century. On March 29, 1902, the ship was traveling from the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia) to the Netherlands when it encountered severe weather conditions in the Java Sea. The ship was carrying a cargo of sugar, coffee, and other goods, as well as over 100 passengers and crew members. As the storm intensified, the ship began to take on water, and despite efforts to save it, the Van Der Wijck eventually sank, resulting in one of the deadliest maritime disasters in Indonesian history.
