Families develop private languages. A nickname that is secretly derogatory. A phrase ("That’s just how your mother is") that means "suffer in silence." Use this vocabulary. When a character repeats the family’s mantra, the audience knows they are reciting a script, not speaking their truth.
While blood remains the thickest plot device, modern storytelling is expanding the definition of "family drama."
