dedicated to preserving the language Puran Singh championed. About Us - Punjabi University, Patiala
The legacy of both Punjab and the Puranas is not just confined to their historical and cultural contexts but extends into contemporary times. Punjab's contribution to agriculture, music, art, and literature, along with the universal appeal of the Puranas, continues to inspire and educate people around the world.
Puran Singh believed that true spirituality came from hard work. He romanticized the lives of farmers and artisans, seeing their daily work as worship. The "Puran" (complete/whole) person lived in harmony with nature, worked with their hands, and kept their heart connected to the Divine. Legacy in Modern Punjab
Born in 1881 in Salhad (now in Pakistan), Puran Singh’s intellectual journey was anything but linear. He traveled to Japan in 1900 to study Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Tokyo University. It was here that his world expanded. Influenced by the aesthetic beauty of Japanese culture and the revolutionary zeal of Indian expats, he briefly became a Buddhist monk.
