This argument is historically illiterate. In the 1980s, mainstream society said gay people had "a disorder." Today, they say trans people have a disorder. The arguments used to deny trans youth care today ("they are too young to know") are identical to those used to deny gay youth conversion therapy protections. The "Drop the T" movement fails to recognize that the same violent logic that targets trans people will eventually target gender-nonconforming gay people.
Solidarity between transgender and cisgender members of the LGBTQ community is also essential for progress. By working together, the LGBTQ community can address the unique challenges faced by its transgender members and continue to fight for a world where everyone is free to live authentically and without fear of discrimination.
