The (Apple Disk Image) is the installer format for Intel-based Macs running OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) through macOS 10.14 (Mojave), with the last compatible version being macOS 10.15 (Catalina) using a special installer patch. It is not natively compatible with Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) or macOS Ventura/Sonoma/Sequoia without emulation.
